This is a very eager hunting dog. He is front and center the highlight of this piece. This is the energy that hunting dogs bring to their joyful field experience. I painted him in shades of pale yellow with a very thick texture to grab the glaze that I applied for more texture, shadow and shape.
In the background I used subdued colors. My inspiration was the traditional artwork I have seen in museums with this deep shadowed look. Look closely and you will see the boat, gun, and duck. What do you feel when you see it? Does your eye go to the energy in the foreground or rest on the background? — Donald Ryker
