This Eagle standing in shallow water looks fascinated by his own image. The photo made me laugh and I wanted the challenge of being accurate enough with my brush strokes to create a reflection. What does his expression say to you?
I chose to paint him in tints of cool red, which with the water and his white head and tail creates a red white and blue theme. I thought that was appropriate for our national bird.
Purple glaze creates shadows on him, and I subtly altered the color and glaze for his image that is reflected on the water. To create the water, the dark hunter green background has a aquamarine glaze and pthalo blue highlights. I like how light hearted and humorous this piece is. —Donald Ryker
