This cowboy is crossing the river with mist hanging low over the water. It is early morning and very peaceful out. I have been around horses off and on my whole life and I envy people who get to spend their time riding. This artwork is a slightly different style for me. I painted the canvas in the raw umber color as a base for my painting. It allowed me to be free with my brush strokes and not have to fill in as thoroughly. You are able to see the distinction and direction of each brush stroke this way. Look how the horses hindquarters have the feeling of muscle and the cowboy’s shirt has the suggestion of folds, seams, and draping. The water has a distinct foreground and background as the horse splashes in the shallow flowing waters. The far bank is and foliage is shrouded in mist.
