The arctic tundra biome is dry and barren because of the low precipitation at that altitude. It was a challenge to paint that cold dry environment the wolf is resting on. There are stubby grasses and low blooming tiny flowers but also lots of stone and gravel. I painted this white wolf in yellows reminiscent of Franz Marc’s Yellow Dog painting. The light shines from the left and he casts a deep purple shadow on the ground. This high level predator can rest easy because there are very few threats to his safety in his world. —Donald Ryker
